Today, UCLA is commemorating the 100th anniversary of John Wooden's birth. There's no doubt he had a huge impact on our campus—and the world. That's why we're dedicating today's Thank You Thursday to Coach.

Wooden's coaching accomplishments here in Westwood are legendary: seven consecutive NCAA championships and ten titles overall. But his leadership and inspiration are even more well-known. Wooden created the Pyramid of Success [PDF], and his maxims were full of wisdom. Perhaps most importantly, he instilled in his players a perspective that prepared them to succeed on the hardwood—and in life.

"What you are as a person is far more important that what you are as a basketball player."

Thank you, Coach.

Here's a touching tribute video featuring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Vin Scully, Coach Ben Howland, and more:

Tonight, UCLA students will honor his memory in the John Wooden Center, with a ceremony featuring members of the 2010-2011 men's basketball team, famous alumni, and more. Click here for details.
